Berakhot 34

For me, today’s theme centers on humility. We are provided with guidance on how to negotiate without arrogance: “When approached the first time, one should refuse; the second time, one should vacillate like a wick that has just begun to catch a flame but is not yet burning; and the third time, he should stretch his legs and descend before the ark.” One should avoid the impression of being too eager and demonstrate some humility. This section also provides a warning against showing too much hubris when approached for a leadership position. This is very different advice from what I have received during my career, but really resonates with me.

The guidance on the different ways of bowing continues the theme of humility. The act of bowing before a greater power – in this case the lord – is the ultimate act of keeping one’s ego in check and acknowledging one’s place in the infinite universe. Even if one is approached to lead prayer, the suggestion in today’s text is that he should do so with humility and not be too quick to admit he is qualified. And one is reminded of how limited we are as humans with our inability to see the world to come and truly know what exists beyond this life.

The theme is continued here: “In the place where penitents stand, even the full-fledged righteous do not stand.” Even if we believe we are living righteous, pristine lives we should not assume we are better than those who have lost their way and have erred. They have been brought to their knees and admitted their very humanity.

When Rabbi Yoĥanan’s son fell ill he admitted that although he was a learned man that he needed assistance with his prayers. He turned to Rabbi Ĥanina to intervene on his behalf. As learned as he was, he knew he needed help.

And finally this beautiful sentiment to look beyond ourselves to the heavens: “Rabbi Yoĥanan said: One may only pray in a house with windows, as then he can see the heavens and focus his heart.” For me, the message is that it’s important to look above and beyond.
