Berakhot 10

I am intrigued again by another mention of the “world to come” in today’s reading. I went through years of Hebrew School and we were never taught that there was an afterlife. I always thought Judaism focused on how we live our lives in this world. From today’s reading on Sefaria.org: “This seems redundant; what is the meaning of you will die and you will not live? This repetition means: You will die in this world, and you will not live, you will have no share, in the World-to-Come.” The text about Hezekiah gets at the heart of redemption and if a person can pray to receive forgiveness for any bad actions they may have performed. Can our prayer compensate for our actions in this world?
